AMG’s Origins

Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, two skilled racing engineers, founded Mercedes AMG in the 1960s. The Development of AMG:

In 1967, Aufrecht and Melcher established Mercedes AMG as an engineering firm, following closely on the heels of their success. With a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL powered by a 6.8 liter V8 under the hood, they won their first corporate race at the 1971 24 Hours of Spa. The win of this heavyweight Mercedes-Benz sedan over several purpose-built lightweight racing vehicles gave AMG its first taste of international recognition.

In Mercedes AMG history it shows that AMG expanded into its new world headquarters in 1976, to Affalterbach, which at the time was a small little hamlet near Stuttgart with a profusion of apple orchards as its only genuine claim to fame. However, it wasn’t until 1986 that Mercedes AMG history made a real splash in the realm of street-legal production cars. It all started with the AMG “Hammer,” which involved fitting an AMG-tuned 5.0L V8 engine into a Mercedes-Benz E-Class body and turning the automotive world on its head. In reality, this car would go on to become one of the most popular “pin-up” cars in history.

Modern Times:

Mercedes AMG placed a 525 horsepower V12 under the hood of a station waggon, the SL 73, in 1989, resulting in one of the world’s rarest Mercedes AMG vehicles, with only 100 manufactured. The 2014 E63 AMG station waggon has a 577-horsepower engine and all-wheel drive, while the 2015 GLA45 AMG is the newest member of the family.

Mercedes AMG history began by 1990, AMG and Mercedes-Benz had worked out an agreement that allowed AMG parts to be sold and maintained throughout the Mercedes-Benz dealership network globally. The C36 AMG, with a 3.6 liter 268 horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine, was the first authentic Mercedes-AMG vehicle to join the market in 1993.
