Mercedes-Benz AMG – Everything You Need To Know

Mercedes-AMG, also called AMG, is a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG. Headquartered in Affalterbach, Germany, AMG is, without doubt, the innovation hub comprising of an efficient team delivering unparalleled engineering performance, sophisticated design and unmatched luxury for a long time. In other words, it is the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. Generally, the AMG variant of all Mercedes-Benz models are the highest performing vehicles and they are expensive too.

History of AMG

AMG is the brainchild of two engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, who used to work at Daimler-Benz motor sport division in the 1960s. However, not too long after, the company shut down its motor-sports activities. But the duo developed the 300 SE engine for the German Touring Car Championship in 1965 for their colleague at Daimler, who eventually won the event many times. Thus, the reputation of talented engineers came to the fore.

It was in 1967, Aufrecht and Melcher started their own business and founded AMG based on their names Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach engineering firm, design and testing for the development of racing engines. They aimed to develop road vehicles modelled on racing cars. AMG continued to develop performance technology which was used by Mercedes. Customization become a trend in those days, and AMG became a leader in the field. Innovations such as independent cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder and 5.0-liter V8 were special during that era.

In the 1990s, a cooperation agreement was signed between Mercedes and AMG, which gave birth to customized and Mercedes vehicles with AMG options. By the year 1999, Mercedes bought a controlling share of AMG, and by 2005, acquired 100% shares and turned it into a Mercedes-Benz subsidiary.

AMG Philosophy

The philosophy of AMG is to turn the dreams of a performance enthusiast into reality. There is nothing impossible to achieve in the automobile world. In sync with it, engineering is considered as an art that needs to blend with the AMG spirit. For many years, this has helped AMG to innovate, differentiate and shock car enthusiasts with unprecedented driving experiences.

The high powered engines such as five-cylinder diesel, V-8 and V-12 engine variants, inline-four cylinder and the latest electric drive is testimony to the talent. The continuous focus on developing fuel-efficient and sustainable modern luxury and performance make the brand a true automobile legend.

Difference Between AMG and Non-AMG Vehicles

AMG vehicles have higher capabilities than non-AMG variants. Traditionally, whenever Mercedes-Benz launches a new model, the AMG team works with its design, technology and performance to leave space for further development and innovation. Some of the well-known features of AMG models are the engines, interiors, exteriors and transmission/suspension mechanisms. Thus, all the upgrades and optimization can be easily found in AMG variants, which makes them exclusive and expensive.
