First generation (W163; 1997–2005)
The development work for the first generation of the GLE began in 1993. Before that, Mercedes had
associated with Mitsubishi Motors to develop a car that would replace the G-Class that was back then
11 years into production. The association did not work, and Mercedes-Benz developed the car on its own.
It was the year 1997 when Mercedes-Benz launched the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLE
after years of prototype testing. Back then, the GLE had a mid-sized body frame that could fit five or
seven with an optional third-row seat. The GLE was called the M-Class and featured electronic
stability control, the system to determine or detect any loss of control. The M Class also had airbags
fitted back then.
The W163 was available with four-wheel drive, and it also had the new Four-Wheel Electric Traction
system introduced by Mercedes.
A Facelift version of the W163 was revealed in the year 2001 for the 2002 model year, new
headlamps and taillamps were installed along with new alloy wheels for all variants.
Second Generation (W164,2006-2011)
The development for the second generation of the M-Class began in 1999. The M-Class was
redesigned and launched in April 2005 for the 2006 model. This time the changes made were real.
The M-Class looked different. This M-Class was 71mm larger and 150mm longer than the previous
model.
The same W164 platform is shared with the new GL-Class. Several features were added to the M-
Class. Work on the update of the W164 began in the year 2007. In 2009, the M-Class got a minor
facelift.
Third Generation ( W166, 2011-2019)
In June 2011, the third and new generation of the M-Class was introduced. The car was now even
more refined and inspired from the Mercedes-Benz E Class. Mercedes-Benz has also won the “Luxury
Crossover SUV”.
In early 2009, Mercedes-Benz set up a plant in India at Chakan, Pune. The first W166 was produced
and became the first to be made outside the US.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE which we call today is a sports utility vehicle built by Mercedes-Benz. It is the
other name of the famous Mercedes-Benz M Class.
