Timeline
It was the year 1997 when Mercedes-Benz launched the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLE after years of prototype testing. Back then, the GLE had a mid-sized body frame that could fit five or seven with an optional third-row seat. The GLE was called the M-Class and featured electronic stability control, the system to determine or detect any loss of control. The M Class also had airbags fitted back then.
The W163 was available with four-wheel drive, and it also had the new Four-Wheel Electric Traction system introduced by Mercedes.
A Facelift version of the W163 was revealed in the year 2001 for the 2002 model year, new headlamps and taillamps were installed along with new alloy wheels for all variants.
The same W164 platform is shared with the new GL-Class. Several features were added to the M- Class. Work on the update of the W164 began in the year 2007. In 2009, the M-Class got a minor facelift.
In early 2009, Mercedes-Benz set up a plant in India at Chakan, Pune. The first W166 was produced and became the first to be made outside the US.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE which we call today is a sports utility vehicle built by Mercedes-Benz. It is the other name of the famous Mercedes-Benz M Class.
